Following Route 7 out of Brooks, trending northwest on the Moosehead Trail, we set off to explore Dixmont on a brilliant day in May 2021. As we crossed the hills that run like a spine across Waldo County, it was like we were soaring from hilltop to viewpoint. For one dizzying moment all of Maine, stretching to the western highlands lay before us in a blue haze. Then we descended and crossed into Penobscot County and into Dixmont. Dixmont is a point on the map, a crossroads for Routes 7 and 202, a blur for travelers going to and from Bangor. Our goal today was to slow down and actually see Dixmont. Turning north onto Route 202 at Dixmont Corner we discovered the Dixmont Corner Cemetery and the grave of Dr. Elijah Dix (with thanks to Wikipedia). There are actually three headstones, creating a sort of lineage of monuments to the doctor. One reads, "In memory of Doctor Elijah Dix of Boston who deceased in this town (for which he was the founder) May 28th, 1809; aged 62" Now we know something about the Dix in Dixmont. Next installment we will take a closer look at "Founders' Syndrome".
